Robert
G. MacDonald

April 4, 1963
- June 6, 1999
Rob will be remembered,
for his compassion, for his valor, and for his humor. The passion, the persistence,
the truth - that spirit will never die! Our friend and fellow patriot gave of
himself and his time completely and unselfishly for social change. He was a warrior
for FREE SPEECH. He labored intensely for Drug Law Reform as a social activist.
Rob was also a promoter, a poet, a philosopher, and a perpetual student with a
keen intellect for direct action.
Rob was currently enrolled at CCNY (City College New York) attempting to finish
his undergraduate studies. His studies included mythology, philosophy, comparative
literature, and Latin. He aspired to become a lawyer, especially since he has
worked so closely with so many of our own direct action lawyers.
We can remember Rob as the "arrestable organizer". He was arrested many times
for excersing his First Amendment rights. Rob did not capitulate. He resisted.
In the 80's, while at the University of Connecticut, he founded an art gallery
and perfomance art center called "POPULOUS PUDDING" of which he was very proud.
Continueing to promote rock & roll, he promoted the '2 LIVE CREW' during their
obsenity trial and successfully defended their right to perform.
He also promoted the performace artist 'G. G. ALLEN'.
Rob joined the endeavors of CURES NOT WARS and was fundamental in developing strategy
with his close friend and comrade Dana Beal. He was the plaintiff for law suits
against the cities of Chicago and New York for violations of our FREE SPEECH and
ASSEMBLY in public parks and at our rallies and festivals.
Rob was involved in his own struggle with addiction, yet he was an active advocate
for Harm Reduction, Ibogaine Therapy, Needle Exchange, and Marijuana Legalization.
Among his accomplishments were: THE FESTIVAL OF LIFE in Chicago, Grant Park, during
the 1996 National Democratic Convention, at which he and others (the Chicago 5)
were prosecuted but acquitted after a nine month trial. He was represented by
his personal friend and legal representative, Leonard Weinglass.
In Chicago he helped politicize the CHICAGO HEMPFEST and organize the city's first
marches for Drug Law Reform. While CAMPaigning for medical marijuana reform, he
originated the "Saint Valentine's Day Massacre Memorial - Prohibition: Now & Then",
a Drug Policy Conference at the Chicago Historical Society in 1997 and 1998.
He was proud of the fact that he had convinced Rep. Sydney Yate, then the oldest
sitting congressman to endorse the Medical Marijuana bill drafted by Rep. Barney
Frank (MA).
He organized the first 'National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality' in Chicago.
(1996)
During the summer of 1997 he promoted and toured The IBOGAINE Story in the midwest.
He sold and promoted the book, set up book signings, interviews, and was acting
publicist for the book's author Dana Beal.
Rob organized the 'WALK n ROLL', a medical marijuana march on the east coast,
in the fall of 1997 for patients in need of marijuana.
In the spring of 1998 he participated and spoke at the first major Cannabis Rally
in London. In the summer of 1998 Rob organized successful protests in front of
the UN building (NYC) where a 'Worldwide Drug War Conference' was being held.
We cannot think of Rob without also thinking of his partner, lover, and best friend,
Bonnie Tocwish. They were a team. He was both mentor and inspiration for her continued
political and social activism. More than that, they shared an unconditional, undying
love, which has given Bonnie the strength and courage and optimism to carry forward
his quest for justice. He also gave her a sweet little dog named Chicago, that
he adored. (Who is well and much loved!) We will miss you my brother.
Eternal love and eternal peace.
